Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound

(P-VINE) UK release date: 5 February 2021

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - SHYGA! The Sunlight MoundJudging by the torrent of enthusiastic inventiveness on this record, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets appear to have been drinking from the same spiked classic rock chalice that has been fuelling the aural outpourings of their fellow countrymen King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Bolstered by one killer Monkees chorus after another, they leapfrog giddily with abandon from tune to tune, barely drawing breath over the course of its aggressively shaved 40-minute run time.

Amidst the squall is a clear debt to the stomping glam of T-Rex and there are more than a few fleeting glimpses of Led Zeppelin’s boundless hoary mysticism. Bashing away at their instruments they come across salaciously hormonal and aggressively freeform.

The upshot of this sense of conviction is that the record gets off to a sturdy start with the marauding storm of Tally Ho, an inspired blast furnace of knee shaking garage liberally peppered with crudely patchworked shoegaze elements (processed voices, looping drum rolls and diaphanous bass line) and that knock on effect carries through to the final track. Marked by impassioned lyricism, sudden tempo shifts and curling slivers of feedback, they pack more into the blueprints of each individual number than many contemporaries would manage to achieve across their whole career.

Take Hats Off To The Green Bins for example, which could be Sparks‘ Mael brothers on the down low in Skegness or Reno working the slot machines, its smattering of end of the pier vaudeville goofiness pitted against existential rock and roll dynamics, or The Tale of Gurney Gridman which never quite stands still, encompassing cheeky mod balladry, gargantuan stadium approved riffage and an electrified middle section that should remind you of the Tales Of The Unexpected theme played at twice the correct speed.

They deserve adulation for the Antipodean disregard for conventional norms in regards to song titles alone. Where else would a Pukebox rub up against a Mundungus, or a Glitter Bug be given credence alongside with a Sawtooth Monkfish? That collaged take on Captain Beefheart originality is what makes these songs so arresting and idiosyncratic. Distinguished by its wide eyed, maddeningly flamboyant mélange of ideas, these Perth psychonauts’ latest is so potent you risk getting tinnitus and/or a contact high from each monolithic twist and turn.
